Mourinho returning to Real Madrid 13 years later? The trend is seriously taking shape. We have known for several weeks that Alvaro Arbeloa’s future was now dotted – the 43-year-old technician has alienated a large part of his locker room – but we did not know precisely who would arrive to succeed him in this mess.
Several names have surfaced: Didier Deschamps, Jürgen Klopp, Lionel Scaloni, Unai Emery, and therefore José Mourinho. A priori, the last city asserts itself as the big favorite, and by quite a distance now. Highly appreciated by Florentino Perez, even if he left the club in 2013 amid conflicts with his locker room, Mourinho is today seen as the one capable of restoring order in a locker room fractured at all levels.
An agreement soon reached
This morning, the Madrid daily A.S. goes even further and affirms that an agreement in principle has just been found between the Merengue club and the Special One, currently on the Benfica bench (the Lisbon club is working to find his replacement, and Ruben Amorim would even be considered). According to A.S.the arrival of Mourinho will be (officially) completed once the season is over, out of respect for Benfica whose end of the season is full of challenges.
The Aguias are neck and neck with Sporting, also 76 points, and aim to finish 2nd in the championship to secure the qualifying matches for the Champions League. This will be Mourinho’s last big goal on the bench of the Portuguese club. Today, Real Madrid no longer sees any other option than the 63-year-old technician, whose release clause amounts to only 3 million euros. Marca goes in the same direction and affirms this morning that “significant progress” were achieved in the arrival of Mourinho.
