Just over a month before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Iran has cleared up the confusion surrounding its situation.

33 days before kick-off, the 2026 World Cup is taking shape and Iran will finally be there despite the uncertainties linked to the conflict in the Middle East. The Iranian federation confirmed this Saturday the participation of its men’s team in the 23rd edition of the World Cup scheduled for the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The body noted the presence of Iran on its official website, while imposing strict conditions on the host countries. Tehran demands in particular guarantees on the issuance of visas, the security of the delegation and respect for the flag, the anthem and the national staff. “We will participate in the tournament but without renouncing our beliefs, our culture and our convictions”we can read.

This position comes in an already sensitive climate. Last month, Canada refused entry to its territory to the president of the Iranian federation, due to his supposed links with the Revolutionary Guards, classified as a terrorist organization by Ottawa in 2024.

Iran sets its conditions

The president of the federation, Mehdi Taj, affirms that ten demands have been transmitted to the organizers, including travel facilities and reinforced security conditions, particularly in airports, hotels and journeys to the stadiums. The stated objective: to guarantee equal and unhindered treatment for the entire delegation.

“All players and members of the technical staff, in particular those who have completed their military service within the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (…) must obtain visas without any problem”he asked. Sportingly, Iran is in Group G and will be based in Tucson, Arizona. They will face New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt in Group G.
