Djibril Cissé pleads for the arrival of Estéban Lepaul in the French team for the 2026 World Cup, even if it means shaking up the hierarchy in attack.

The World Cup is fast approaching. In a little over a month, the United States, Canada and Mexico will vibrate to the rhythm of round leather, on the occasion of the 23rd edition of the World Cup, the first with 48 participating nations, including France. For this, Didier Deschamps will announce in six days his list of players selected for the trip.

For this global meeting, Estéban Lepaul, top scorer in Ligue 1, is regularly mentioned. But the French staff was clear: there should be no new faces in the Blues group. “A list is decided until the last days. “You should never say never but I don’t think a player who has never been selected with us could be in the game”explained Guy Stéphan, Deschamps’ deputy, to
West France in April.

“I put him in front of Randal Kolo Muani”

But Djibril Cissé is not of the same opinion. The former AJ Auxerre player believes the Rennes striker deserves his chance. Asked by The Team on a possible selection of Lepaul, he was categorical: ” Yes. Because he’s a scorer. He has shown that he knows how to do it, he shows it every weekend, he has his place. And we always need someone to score goals, even if they start from afar. Plus, he won’t be angry if he doesn’t play. »

For this, Djibril Cissé would go so far as to dismiss Randal Kolo Muani: “Estéban deserves his place. Hugo (Ekitike) is injured. Today I put him in front of Randal Kolo Muani. Christopher Nkunku is not the same “race” of attackers. I have a weakness for Estéban, and that would put Ligue 1 forward too. This is just my opinion and people will think I’m crazy, but I’m not saying this to please. He deserves. In a group of 25 or 26, I, Djibril Cissé, coach, I take him”. Verdict expected on May 14 at 8 p.m.
