FC Nantes will play in Ligue 2 next season after their defeat at Lens (1-0).

FC Nantes is officially relegated to Ligue 2 after its defeat at Lens (1-0), Saturday evening during the 33rd day of Ligue 1. In a celebrating Bollaert stadium, the Sang et Or validated their qualification for the next Champions League, while the Canaries leave the elite after a nightmarish season.

However, the meeting was undecided for a long time. Lens dominated the start of the match, including a big chance for Wesley Saïd, repelled by Anthony Lopes. But Nantes gradually gained confidence and proved dangerous, like Lepenant’s rebound perfectly diverted by Risser after returning from the locker room.

Mesloub delivers Lens and condemns Nantes

The Lensois then pushed to make the difference. Sima thought he would open the scoring before seeing his goal disallowed, while Abline missed a huge opportunity on the Nantes side by finding the post after a superb individual number.

The turning point finally came in the 79th minute. Having entered the game a few moments earlier, Mezian Mesloub scored on his very first professional ball to give the Sang et Or victory. A decisive goal which sent Lens to the Champions League and definitively condemned Nantes to relegation.
