Two days before the Champions League semi-final return between Bayern Munich and PSG, UEFA made an unexpected decision.

After wowing the football world last week on the pitch at the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich meet again this Wednesday evening (9 p.m.) at the Allianz Arena for the return leg (5-4 victory for the Parisians in the first leg). A match which will be refereed by a novice at this stage of the competition.

This Monday, UEFA revealed the identity of the referee who will direct this Champions League semi-final return. This is the Portuguese Joao Pinheiro. A choice that may come as no surprise since the latter has never been on the whistle for a match in the last four of the most prestigious European competition.

A good memory for Parisians and Bavarians

Aged 38, Joao Pinheiro has, on the other hand, already crossed paths with PSG. At the start of the season, he officiated during the European Super Cup won by Luis Enrique’s men against Tottenham. Furthermore, he was the fourth in the last C1 final won by the Parisians against Inter Milan (5-0).

The Lusitanian official also managed two Bayern Munich matches in the Champions League. Two matches which ended in two Bavarian victories, against Slovan Bratislava (3-1), last season, and PSV Eindhoven (2-1), on January 28.
