It almost took a miracle for Inter Milan not to be crowned this season in Serie A. Leaders of the championship since the 15th day, the Nerazzurri could convert the try this evening following Naples’ draw against Como (0-0). It was still necessary to hold on against Parmesans without challenges at the end of the season, but winners of their last two matches against Udinese and Pisa.
Chivu’s men finally enforced the hierarchy by winning 2-0 thanks to Marcus Thuram, author of his 13th goal of the season in Serie A, and Mkhitaryan. A success above all synonymous with the 21st Italian championship title for Inter, still very far behind Juve and their 31 crowns, but a notch ahead of AC Milan and their 19 crowns. This Scudetto also rewards a season generally dominated by the Lombards on the national scene, while its competitors showed far too much inconsistency throughout the year. If they win their last three matches, the Nerazzurri would equal their 2021 tally (91 points) when they were champions with Antonio Conte.
A double still possible
Among the great architects of this coronation, how can we not think of Federico Dimarco, author of 6 goals and 18 assists in the championship (a record in the history of the championship)? Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu, still influential in the midfield, Marcus Thuram, amazing in the final sprint, Lautaro Martinez, Calcio’s top scorer and talisman of his team (Inter Milan takes almost 2.5 points per game with the Argentinian, and less than 1.7 without), also deserve honors.
There remains the case of Alessandro Bastoni, author of a good season but whose future in Italy seems more uncertain than ever since the fiasco against Juventus Turin and that of Italy in the World Cup play-offs. The 27-year-old defender may have won his last Calcio in Inter colors, but perhaps not his last trophy. The Lombard club will still be able to achieve a Cup – Championship double, despite eliminations in the Champions League and the Italian Super Cup. The Milanese will challenge Lazio in the final on May 13.
