It’s historic, the bottom of the Championship – the antechamber of the Premier League, the elite of English football – ended its season this weekend with zero points on the clock. After 46 days of championship!
The feat goes to Sheffield Wednesday, a club which counts or has counted within the kingdom, credited in particular with four league titles and three English Cups. Banned from the first division since 2000, the institution from the north of the country, around sixty kilometers from Manchester, thus falls back into League One – a third division left only three years earlier.
Bankruptcy narrowly avoided
This Saturday, Sheffield Wednesday still concluded its season in absolute jubilation, with a victory over West Bromwich Albion (2-1) in front of 33,750 supporters – the biggest crowd of the year in the Championship – only a second success in the championship in this 2025-2026 exercise which resembles a cross.
Why the zero on the counter then? Because the Owls (the Hiboux in French) received a heavy penalty of 18 units due to their shaky finances. An announced bankruptcy which a priori will fortunately not happen. In addition to today’s victory, Sheffield Wednesday was able to celebrate the official takeover of the club by the American consortium Arise Capital Partners. All is not lost.
