Olympique de Marseille sees one of its priority files becoming complicated in the search for its future sports director.

Olympique de Marseille is preparing to experience a pivotal summer. New visual identity, change at the presidency with the arrival of Stéphane Richard in place of Pablo Longoria, and imminent recruitment of a sports director. The Marseille club is launching a major reorganization.

But several files remain unresolved, starting with the succession of Mehdi Benatia, whose departure at the end of the season is confirmed. “Mehdi was ready to leave early. I asked him to come so we could talk and reconsider his choice. He agreed to do it but told me he was stopping at the end of the season. I told him okay. I can therefore confirm that he will leave at the end of the season”explained Frank McCourt.

An overseas lead fades away

Olympique de Marseille must now accelerate the choice of its future sports director. In recent weeks, several profiles have been studied internally, notably those of Cristiano Giuntoli and Paul Mitchell, two leaders recognized on the European market. But the path leading to the Italian becomes seriously complicated.

Indeed, according to Il Messaggero, Cristiano Giuntoli would now be in pole position to join AS Roma, where he could succeed Frédéric Massara, expected to leave. A matter all the more delicate as several Premier League clubs would also have joined the dance. In this context, OM must review its plans.
