Nigerian football is in mourning. Former international Michael Eneramo, emblematic figure of Esperance Sportive de Tunis, died Friday morning at the age of 40, after collapsing during a friendly match in Ungwan Yelwa, in the state of Kaduna, announced the Nigerian Football Federation. According to initial information, the tragedy occurred a few minutes after the start of the second half, without contact, suggesting a cardiac arrest.
Trained at Lobi Stars, the striker joined Esperance Sportive de Tunis in 2004. After several loans to gain experience, he established himself as one of the most feared scorers in the Tunisian championship. With 51 goals in 86 league matches, he largely contributed to the club’s hegemony, notably winning five Tunisian championship titles and reaching the final of the African Champions League in 2010, where he finished as top scorer.
He played against France
In 2008, Michael Eneramo was also approached by Tunisia with a view to changing his sporting nationality. Holder of a Tunisian passport thanks to his time at Espérance Sportive de Tunis, the striker had been the subject of advanced discussions to join the Carthage Eagles. However, he declined this opportunity, ultimately choosing to represent Nigeria
On the international scene, Eneramo made 10 caps with the Super Eagles, between 2009 and 2011, scoring three goals. He notably participated in a memorable victory against France in Saint-Étienne (1-0) and played a role in Nigeria’s qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup.
