A figure in Ivorian football caught by the courts. Former international Abdoulaye Traoré, African champion at the 1992 African Cup of Nations, was sentenced to three years in prison for rape by the Bouaké court.
Nicknamed “Ben Badi”, the 59-year-old former striker marked the history of ASEC Mimosas and the Ivorian selection, of which he was one of the major faces in the 1990s. He also had a career in Europe, with stints at FC Metz, SC Braga, as well as SC Toulon and Avenir Club Avignonnais.
Three years in prison
The judicial decision was made public by the Ivorian League for Women’s Rights. “Ben Badi was sentenced (Wednesday) to 36 months in prison, to pay 15 million CFA francs (around €23,000) to the victim, to ten years of deprivation of his civil rights as well as a ban on appearing in Bouaké for five years”announced the organization.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed several additional measures. Abdoulaye Traoré was deprived of his civil rights for ten years and banned from staying in the city of Bouaké for a period of five years. According to a judicial source, the ex-scorer was found guilty of having had non-consensual sexual relations in March 2021 with a woman aged 21 at the time.
