Morocco will have to review its plans a month and a half before the start of the 2026 World Cup. Initially, the Atlas Lions were scheduled to face El Salvador in a friendly match on June 3 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland (United States). A meeting which was ultimately canceled.
The reason? The Moroccan selection will not be able to have all of its international players available from the end of May, with several players still involved with their respective clubs. The FRMF then proposed to move the match to June 2, in Morocco, taking charge of all the logistical costs of traveling for the Salvadoran selection. But the latter refused.
The president of the Salvadoran federation (FESFUT) explained through a press release published on his X account that FIFA does not authorize two matches on two different continents during a truce. Indeed, the Cuscatlecos will play a friendly match against Qatar on June 6 in Los Angeles.
Morocco must find a new opponent
“ We thanked the Moroccan Federation for its sensitivity, its professionalism and its open-mindedness, while specifying that we would have been delighted to play this match, but that it is impossible for us to go there because, in accordance with the provisions of the International Federation of Association Football, it is not possible to play on two different continents on the same FIFA date and, in accordance with our schedule and our program, we have planned to play two friendly matches during this period », indicated the boss of FESFUT.
Morocco will therefore have to find a new opponent to prepare for its World Cup. As a reminder, Achraf Hakimi and his partners will face Norway on June 7 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison (United States).
