Funny evening for FC Barcelona. Smiles, but also fear, were on faces at the Camp Nou this Wednesday when Barça won against Celta Vigo (1-0), thus putting one hand and nine fingers on the title of champion of Spain.
This is explained, firstly, by the injury exit of Lamine Yamal. The Spanish genius was forced to give up his place before the end of the first period after discomfort felt in the hamstring of his left leg… while taking a penalty.
Then came the time to celebrate their captain Frenkie De Jong, who became the most capped Dutchman in the club’s history with 293 official appearances for the Blaugrana jersey since July 2019.
Frenkie De Jong aims for another record
The former Ajax Amsterdam player surpasses his compatriot Phillip Cocu and his 292 matches played between 1998 and 2004. Quite a symbol, it was the former midfielder who presented him with his jersey of honor after the final whistle, from the Camp Nou pitch.
Frenkie De Jong will also have the opportunity to break another very prestigious record, as FC Barcelona recalls in a press release. That of the Dutchman having won the greatest number of trophies with the club. Number 21 has seven, three fewer than Ronald Koeman and his ten titles.
The ranking:
- Frenkie De Jong – 293 matches
- Phillip Cocu – 292 matches
- Ronald Koeman – 264 matches
- Patrick Kluivert – 257 matches
- Michael Reiziger – 252 matches
