Former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman has criticized Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for excessive celebrations after every save.

The legendary goalkeeper also gave his opinion on Gunners star David Raya as the London club aim for their first Premier League title since Seaman’s playing days.

Seaman attacks Donnarumma

When asked about the current state of goalkeeping by Adebayo Akinfenwa on the Beast Mode On podcast, Seaman named Donnarumma among the players who annoy him, due to his propensity to celebrate his saves.

He said: “ The ones who really celebrate their saves, even if Donnarumma, who is one of my favorites at the moment, was doing exaggerated celebrations after some pretty decent saves, I’m like, “Come on, you’re better than that!” » » When I see goalkeepers, upon their arrival at a club, who exult after a save, even not spectacular, I say to myself: “But anyway, what are you doing? » We need to celebrate when it really matters! It really annoys me.

Seaman believes current Arsenal goalkeeper Raya is showing exemplary consistency as the Gunners aim for their first Premier League title since 2004. They are currently six points clear of Manchester City.

About his successor, Seaman adds: “He makes decisive saves. There was this double save where, while leaning back, he brushed the ball with his head, got up, and an opponent took the ball and pushed him away. And then, this season, he made an incredible save against Brighton: a curling shot, which he touched, hit the crossbar and went over.

With David, we have a goalkeeper with exceptional consistency. »And he got used to being a goalkeeper at Arsenal. Before he was a goalkeeper at Brentford, he had a lot to do. Then he came to Arsenal, a very similar situation to mine, where he took over from fan favorite Aaron Ramsdale. So he had to deal with that pressure, on top of trying to impress the crowd and be a good goalkeeper. He found it difficult in his first season. Now, since Aaron left, he has really blossomed.

“I really like watching Raya play. He is calm and has great self-confidence. When we look at his background, we see that he arrived in Blackburn at 16 years old. He has therefore played in the English divisions until today. So he’s played at all levels and I’m sure that helps him. »
