The story between Olympique de Marseille and Facundo Medina seemed to have barely begun. Arriving last summer with defensive priority status, the Argentinian international disappeared from the radar for a long time, hampered by a stubborn injury. Six short matches later, however, here he is at the center of a rumor which is already questioning Marseille’s strategy.
An approach from Argentina
According to several South American media, River Plate have expressed a concrete interest in Facundo Medina. The argument is simple: a central role, guaranteed playing time and ideal exposure a few months before a World Cup that the defender still hopes to play. Marcelo Gallardo, who already appreciated him in the past, would see him as a key reinforcement to stabilize the Millonarios rearguard.
For OM, the situation is delicate. Difficult to evaluate sportingly a player who has not yet been able to continue, and even more difficult to justify a departure when his absence has never been linked to a lack of level. Roberto De Zerbi is counting on him to densify a sometimes fragile defensive sector, and the club rarely has an interest in offloading a player bought at a high price so quickly.
Medina, a revealing file
This rumor nevertheless raises a broader question: are OM ready to listen to offers for newly arrived recruits, as has already been the case in the past? Everything will depend on the proposal submitted and the club’s ability to strengthen itself in the process. At this point, there is no indication of an imminent release. But in Marseille, the transfer window often presents scenarios that we did not see coming.
