CAN 2025: Fear over Morocco

This is one of the parameters that it was difficult to anticipate in this 2025 African Cup of Nations: the vagaries of the Moroccan weather, and the sometimes torrential rains observed since the start of the competition on December 21. Throughout the group stage, the weather proved gloomy, not to say execrable. And it’s not going to get better in the next few days.

“ The General Directorate of Meteorology announced that from this Friday, January 2, Morocco is affected by a significant deterioration in weather conditions. At issue: the approach of an active and intense Atlantic depression, named Francis within the framework of the European storm naming system », relays the Moroccan media L’Information.

Since Friday, Storm Francis has been raging across the country and threatening many Moroccan provinces. So much so that local authorities are calling for vigilance, recommending in particular that residents avoid unnecessary travel in certain areas likely to be flooded.

Agadir on alert

Winds of more than 100 km/h and heavy rain promise to disrupt the country in the coming days, at least until Wednesday. The western provinces of Morocco have been placed on red alert, like the prefecture of Agadir Ida-Outanane whose capital, Agadir, is due to host the round of 16 between Egypt and Benin on Monday.

Five of the 16 matches in the final phase of this CAN 2025 should not be unduly impacted by this disastrous weather since the Prince Moulay-Abdellah stadium, newly inaugurated and the next scene of the grand final on January 18 in particular, is equipped with drainage technology (SubAir system) which has already proven itself during the first round.
