Senegal and DR Congo parted in a draw (1-1), this Sunday, during the second day of group D. A result which allows the Lions of Téranga to maintain the lead of the group thanks to a better goal difference, but which above all leaves an impression of relief after a meeting partially dominated by the Leopards, particularly at the start of the second half.
Building on its great inaugural success against Botswana (3-0), Senegal started the meeting with ambition. Very quickly, Ismaïla Sarr then Nicolas Jackson tried to make a difference, without success. The chances continued on the Senegalese side, but precision was lacking. Opposite, the DRC, victorious over Benin on the first day (1-0), showed great defensive rigor and quickly launched a counterattack, like the goal refused to Mukau for offside in the 15th minute.
Despite a clear territorial domination of Pape Thiaw’s men, the first period was poor in shots on target. We had to wait until just before the break to see Pape Gueye force Mpasi into a decisive save. The DRC, solid and disciplined, folded without breaking and even seemed to gain confidence as the minutes passed, taking advantage of the spaces left by the Lions.
Verdict Tuesday
When we returned from the locker room, the appearance changed. The Leopards clearly took control of the match, multiplying dangerous situations. Edouard Mendy was first saved by a huge tackle from Kalidou Koulibaly, before losing on the hour mark. On a poorly repelled shot from Bongonda, Cédric Bakambu appeared and opened the scoring, rewarding the Congolese highlight (60′).
Hit but not sunk, Senegal reacted quickly. On a failed restart by the Congolese defense, Mbaye saw his shot deflected towards Sadio Mané, who finished with a dry strike. A saving goal which allows the Lions of Téranga to limit the damage. With four points each, Senegal and DRC remain tied before a decisive final day. The Senegalese will face Benin, while the Leopards will challenge Botswana. Everything remains open.
