When Elye Wahi (22 years old) joined Eintracht Frankfurt in exchange for €26 million, after his failure at Olympique de Marseille (3 goals, 1 assist in 14 matches), the young French striker perhaps imagined himself experiencing the same rise as Randal Kolo Muani or Hugo Ekitike. “I’m happy to be at Eintracht from now on. It’s a great club that I’ve heard a lot of positive things about. For me, it quickly became clear that I wanted to take this chance and come here. I want to repay the confidence placed in me by performing well and scoring goals.”declared the native of Courcouronnes upon his arrival.
Unfortunately for him, the Bundesliga does not really serve as a springboard for relaunching his career. With the German club, the former Marseillais only scored one small goal in 14 appearances (3 starts). A not great record to which must be added a very complicated relationship with his trainer, Dino Toppmöller. On November 22, after the match won on the field of Cologne (4-3), Toppmöller was not very tender with his French striker. “In the end we obviously also have to talk about the players who came in and absolutely did not advocate for more playing time”.
Eintracht coach criticized internally
Since then, the German media have continued to repeat that a divorce between the two parties is inevitable. At least a “break” from this winter, just to see if the player, whose contract runs until 2030, can restart elsewhere. This Wednesday, Bild tells us that a crisis meeting is planned during the winter break between Wahi, his advisors and the leaders of Eintracht Frankfurt. The three parties will try to analyze the reasons why the mayonnaise did not take hold between Wahi and Frankfurt. Once the diagnosis has been made, a decision will be made regarding the player’s future.
The German newspaper assures that a permanent transfer is not excluded, and the thesis of a return to France is put forward, even if Eintracht does not really expect a sale if it wants to recover its investment. A loan is therefore preferred, but Bild adds that a small, significant twist has occurred. Clearly, coach Toppmöller is criticized internally for not necessarily treating the Frenchman fairly. The media explains that Wahi was recruited with the aim of playing in a two-man attack. However, the Eintracht coach has never used him in this role and the chosen playing system would not correspond to the Frenchman’s qualities. In short, it’s what’s called a casting error!
