Violent clashes broke out near Genoa’s Luigi Ferraris stadium before kick-off in the Serie A match between Genoa and Inter Milan. In the Marassi district, tension rose a notch when groups of supporters of the two teams found themselves near the visitors’ section, particularly around Piazza Romagnosi. Scenes of real urban guerrilla warfare were observed, with violent exchanges and a climate of great confusion. According to several local media, smoke bombs, flares and pyrotechnic devices were thrown into the crowd.
One of these projectiles hit a car parked nearby, causing it to catch fire and causing significant material damage. The provisional report shows at least two injured, while several other vehicles were also damaged. Faced with the seriousness of the situation, the police intervened quickly to try to contain the violence and secure the perimeter around the stadium. Traffic was temporarily stopped in the grandstand area and ambulances were dispatched to the scene to help those involved in the clashes.
