Real Madrid’s narrow victory on the pitch of Deportivo Alavés (2-1) this Sunday in La Liga was not enough to satisfy Xabi Alonso. The Spanish technician particularly deplored the penalty not whistled following a foul on Vinicius Jr in the 86th minute.

The Merengue coach did not hesitate to severely criticize the refereeing in the post-match press conference. He particularly disliked Pablo González Fuertes, responsible for video assistance.

“We will leave it there”

“I’m going to talk about the action, not the referee. For me, it was clearly a penalty. Vini goes very quickly, there is contact… and I am very surprised that he did not even consult the VAR. That said, this does not surprise us. We must continue. González Fuertes at VAR? You said it. And we will leave it there”said Xabi Alonso.

Last season, the Spanish referee had already found himself at the heart of a controversy with the Spanish vice-champion. Before the Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona (2-3, ap) on April 26, the main referee of the match, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, assisted by Pablo González Fuertes at VAR, denounced constant pressure from Real Madrid TV.

The club’s television channel produces videos before each match compiling contentious decisions against Real. According to Fuertes, these montages aim to discredit the referees and could influence their next decisions on the green rectangle.
