Matvey Safonov’s adventure at Paris Saint-Germain is not a long, quiet river. Arriving last season from Krasnodar, the Russian goalkeeper had to manage his environment at the same time as the problems linked to his divorce. This season, he must deal with Luis Enrique’s choice to only play Lucas Chevalier. So not easy for Safonov who also revealed in an interview given to the podcast Smol Talk by Fedor Smolov, who he often discusses with Luis Enrique, but who sometimes has difficulty understanding his coach.
“It’s quite common. Just talk, even about trivial things, ask “How are you?”, “How are you feeling?” or “Where did you go this weekend?”, it’s a casual topic. But I think I would understand him better if I understood Spanish, because we already have quite a few guys who speak Spanish, and it’s easier for him to speak his native language. We have a French interpreter. I haven’t learned Spanish yet, and from what he says I only understand the French part, because he also started learning French and, I believe, now speaks it quite fluently.”he confided.
