Sensation in Qatar, where the 2025 Arab Cup is being played. Winner of the previous edition, Algeria was knocked out in the quarter-finals by the United Arab Emirates this Friday, after a thrilling penalty shootout (1-1, 6 tab to 7).
Dominant during the first act, during which they were denied two goals for offside positions, the Fennecs did not manage to take the advantage. Returning from the locker room, Madjid Bougherra’s men ended up finding the fault through Boulbina (1-0, 46th).
But the Emiratis quickly got back on track thanks to Bruno (1-1, 64th). The Algerians pushed at the end of the match to secure qualification, in vain. We therefore had to wait for extra time and the penalty shootout for this quarter-final to deliver its verdict.
Benzia and Khacef miss the target
Yassine Benzia for Algeria and Marcus Meloni for the United Arab Emirates missed their attempt, then they had to wait for the 8e shooters so that the situation is resolved. Algerian Naoufel Khacef ended up missing his attempt, and Richard Akonnor sent his team into the last four.
We will therefore not be entitled to a remake of the 2021 edition, where the Algerians won on penalties (5-3) against the Moroccans. The latter will face the UAE on Monday (3:30 p.m.). The other half will pit Saudi Arabia against Jordan, also on Monday (6:30 p.m.).
