As part of the 13th day of the Premier League, Chelsea welcomed Arsenal for the clash of the weekend, between the Blues temporarily overtaken in the standings after the victories of Manchester City and Aston Villa, and the Gunners who are solid leaders. If successful, Enzo Maresca’s men could come back to just three points behind Arsenal and regain second place in the standings. The Italian technician had also renewed an eleven very close to the one which had largely dominated FC Barcelona (3-0) in the Champions League in the middle of the week, with an attack carried by the nugget Estevão, Pedro Neto and João Pedro. Opposite, Arsenal also presented themselves with great confidence after humiliating Tottenham last weekend (4-1) and beating Bayern Munich in C1 (3-1). Arteta had aligned his attacking trio Saka–Merino-Martinelli, supported by Eze, author of a hat-trick against Spurs. A solid composition, despite a lack of size in defense: that of William Saliba, package for this immense shock.
Several important returns took place on the benches: Cole Palmer found a place in the squad for Chelsea, while Gyökeres and Gabriel Jesus returned from injury for Arsenal. In a boiling Stamford Bridge, everything came together for a major clash between two teams who are in superb momentum and determined to make a big impact in the Premier League. From the start of the match, the tone rose sharply between the two English teams, like the Caicedo-Merino duel in the 3rd minute of play. A few moments later, Blues captain Reece James suffered a major anti-playing foul from Zubimendi. As is often the case, the French right-back Malo Gusto played very high, like a midfielder, in order to bring the surplus to the heart of the game. After the first yellow card of the match for Zubimendi in the 5th minute, Marc Cucurella also received the same sanction for a tackle deemed too strong on Bukayo Saka (11th). The match was very choppy, to the point that Mr. Taylor warned Mosquera in the 13th minute, for a late foul on João Pedro: 3 yellow cards before the quarter of an hour.
Moisés Caicedo cuts Mikel Merino and sees red
Brazilian nugget Estêvão Willian had a huge opportunity to open the scoring: after a ball blocked by the defense which returned to his feet, he tried his luck with his right foot, his weak foot, but completely missed his shot. Chelsea then pushed in the first half, like Enzo Fernández, incisive in his projections. In the 21st minute, the Argentinian entered the area before being completely stopped by a splendid return from Jurriën Timber. Two minutes later, Estêvão tried to throw Gusto in depth, but his pass, too powerful, ended up going out. Calafiori, impeccable in his left lane, also shone, as in the 27th where he perfectly cut off a Blues offensive. João Pedro lacked lucidity by serving Enzo Fernández far too late (30th). The 2022 World Champion still tried his luck a few minutes later, with a strong shot from the right, perfectly captured by Rulli (33rd).
The turning point then came: Mikel Merino and Moisés Caicedo collided in midfield, both players remaining on the ground for several minutes. After VAR intervention, the referee finally sent off Caicedo. The Ecuadorian arrived at full speed and hit the bottom of the Spaniard’s shin: a sole as dangerous as it was uncontrolled, logically punished with a red card (38th). Overall, the two teams neutralized each other during this choppy first act, marked by several fouls and stoppages of play. Arsenal showed some offensive initiatives, notably via Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, but their attempts were well contained by Chelsea and Robert and a good Sánchez. Trevoh Chalobah received treatment twice, while Piero Hincapié also received a yellow card (41st). In numerical superiority, the Gunners dominated the ball at the very end of the first period, but the two teams parted with a goalless score at the break (0-0).
Chelsea snatch a draw while outnumbered
After returning from the locker room, Enzo Maresca decided to bring out Estêvão Willian to replace him with Alejandro Garnacho. In the 47th minute, João Pedro almost opened the scoring for Chelsea from a free kick from Reece James, but his header was diverted for a corner by David Raya. A minute later, on the same corner, Trevoh Chalobah headed the ball perfectly into the right net, giving the Blues the advantage (1-0, 48th). Lewis-Skelly was warned for a charge on Reece James in the Chelsea camp (54th). Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Mikel Arteta’s men intensified the pressure and ended up equalizing: shifted to the right by Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka provoked, entered the area, hooked Marc Cucurella before crossing at the far post, where Mikel Merino headed perfectly to score the equalizer on the left of the goal (1-1, 59th).
Wesley Fofana climbed very high on the pitch to commit a foul on former Chelsea player, Noni Madueke (65th). An intervention that was not really necessary, but which had the merit of sending a message: the former Stéphanois wanted to remind us that we do not move from one London club to another with impunity. Moments later, Madueke was replaced by Viktor Gyökeres. In the 77th minute, Jurriën Timber committed an avoidable foul on Alejandro Garnacho on the left, giving Chelsea a free kick 35 meters from the goal. On this same free kick from Pedro Neto, the Gunners cleared in a disaster before Bukayo Saka, launched on the right, tried his luck in the area, but missed the target (79th). Malo Gusto made a saving tackle in midfield which allowed Chelsea to breathe a little. In the 88th minute, Viktor Gyökeres hit goalkeeper Sanchez and was logically booked. At the end of the suspense, the two teams part back to back. With this result, Arsenal retains the lead in the Premier League, 5 points ahead of Manchester City. For their part, Chelsea are back on the podium and placed in third position, therefore remaining 6 points behind the leader.
