Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso suggested the cohesion between him and his players had strengthened after a dramatic 4-3 victory over Olympiakos.

It was the Whites’ first ever victory in Greece, and Alonso badly needed it to end a three-game winless streak, but also to quell rumors of tension within the dressing room.

Despite difficulties controlling the match and a permeable defense against Olympiakos, Alonso’s team achieved their best offensive performance of the season. Mbappé’s four goals grabbed the headlines, but Vinicius Junior also displayed his best form of the season.

“The hours leading up to the match were very positive and productive; they allowed us to continue to progress, to overcome difficult moments, and I found the unity of the players very positive”Alonso told Diario AS.

“They were very positive, very productive. They helped us to progress, to try to break the vicious circle, which we succeeded in doing. And learn to deal with difficult times. Very positive. As we mentioned, the unity of the players, their commitment… and that is the only possible way. Beyond the three points, I remember the positive points of what happened behind the scenes. »

Alonso reacts to lack of control and defensive problems

Even if the result was positive for Real Madrid, and the attack was effective, the Basque coach knew that criticism of his management of the match would come. The first question related to Real Madrid’s lack of control during the match.

“First of all, I want to emphasize the essential: the three points. They are vital not only for the standings, but also to end our three-game winless streak. We weren’t feeling comfortable. The match was full of twists and turns. We started well and led 1-0 in the 8th minute, I think. But we remained calm, confident and mature enough not to lose our means. And we managed to turn the situation around without too much difficulty. »

Vinicius and Mbappé outclassed Olympiakos.

“In the second half there were all kinds of chances. They pressed hard and we had to adapt, notably by maintaining possession of the ball for longer. But the match is over now, and I retain the three points (smile). We now have to focus on the championship. »

It was also pointed out to Alonso that Real Madrid had conceded 19 shots, compared to his 13, while Olympiakos had also had more shots on target (8) than the Whites (5).

“It is clear that we must progress in all areas. Stand your ground against the opposing attack, be physically strong, stay united. But we had some very good moments in the first half, and we have to concentrate on that. Because when it wasn’t…we’ll get better. »

“We need this defensive solidity, combined with the offensive efficiency we showed today. We were coming off matches where we struggled to score… and then the disallowed goal for Vini was a real shame. But today the important thing was to win. We did it, we broke this bad patch a little. And now we want to do the same in the league. »
