The Blues had already tried to recruit the French international this summer, but AC Milan had obstructed their efforts. The Italian club were unwilling to part with a world-class goalkeeper on the cheap, while Chelsea were unwilling to invest an exorbitant sum on a player who had one year left on his contract.
Maignan is now in the final months of his contract, and the Rossoneri are desperately trying to convince him to extend it, as he is currently at the peak of his form. The 30-year-old was the hero of the Milan derby last weekend, saving a penalty from Hakan Calhanoglu.
Maignan was the hero of the Milan derby
Milan have made the goalkeeper a new contract offer worth a staggering €5 million per year, an amount that Italian media described as “exceptionally generous” for a player over 30 years old.
Despite this, the threat of a free start this summer remains credible. In reality, it appears Milan are fighting a losing battle as Chelsea are back in the race.
Chelsea relaunch discussions with Maignan
At least that’s what Sacha Tavolieri says, who indicates that Chelsea “resumed contact with the Frenchman” in order to explore the possibility of a transfer in 2026.
Maignan reached an agreement with the London club this summer; so it shouldn’t be too difficult for Chelsea to convince him to join the club next year.
