The coach of Olympique de Marseille, Roberto De Zerbi, appreciated his team’s victory (2-1) against Newcastle on Tuesday in the Champions League, seeing it as a strong sign that OM now has the means to obtain a place for the rest of the competition.

This victory, obtained thanks to a quick double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the second half, puts an end to a nightmare series for OM: it is their first victory in the Champions League against a team from the European “Big 4” (England, Spain, Germany, Italy) since February 2012, putting an end to 17 consecutive defeats in this configuration.

End of a dark series

De Zerbi was delighted with the psychological impact of this success:

“It’s important for the mental aspect, self-esteem too. We can be competitive in the Champions League. We must not have remorse or regrets. »

Confidence for the future

With six points on the clock, OM are provisionally in 19th place (pending Wednesday’s matches). The Italian coach believes that the Marseille club has all the cards in hand to at least reach the play-offs (finishing in the first 24):

We can still qualify. There are three games left. We have the qualities to do it,” Roberto De Zerbi said at a press conference. “ We must always avoid returning home with regrets, telling ourselves that we didn’t do everything as we would have liked. »

The coach also believes that his team has been unlucky so far: “ 6 points is less than we deserved.” he said on Canal+, evoking twists of fate and unfavorable facts of the game.
