Decisive day for OM in the Champions League. The Marseille club hosts Newcastle at the Vélodrome for the 5th day of the league phase. With their backs against the wall with only one victory in four matches, Marseille will try to take three points to keep their chances of qualifying. On and off the field, tension is at its maximum.

Monday evening, violence broke out between Marseille and English supporters, reports RMC. Several videos on social networks show fights in the streets, and a bar frequented by Newcastle fans was targeted by tear gas, according to English supporters on X.

Tension off and on the field

To contain these excesses, an imposing security system was deployed. 1,000 police officers will be present throughout the day in the city, with mobile units positioned at sensitive points and drones to monitor the city center and the surroundings of the stadium.

Sportingly, the situation is also critical for OM. With only three points after four games, the margin for error is almost zero. To aim for the play-offs, Roberto De Zerbi’s players will probably have to achieve at least 10 points, a goal which leaves little room for the unexpected.
