In the latest issue of SPORT BILDthe sporting director of Bayern Munich, Max Eberl returns to the transfer soap opera of the possible departure of Dayot Upamecano. The in-form defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, Germany’s most successful club want to extend it, but competition is tough with Real Madrid and PSG pushing, both with the French international defender in their squad.

“Upa is now 27, the ideal age for a central defender. He wants to make a carefully considered decision, which is completely normal. Upa should not and will not stay for financial reasons, even if he received an interesting offer from us, but for our overall vision and all of his qualities. He is one of the best defenders in the world. Vincent, Christoph and I have always supported him and wish to continue on the path we have traced with him, in order to keep him at the top of his career. He would be our flagship recruit. Final offer? Not yet, we are still in discussion. I’m generally a very positive person, and I think I sense that Upa is very comfortable with the path we’ve chosen.”
