The ordeal began in 2013, after he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon while playing for Évian Thonon Gaillard. During the operation, Govou (49 caps with the Blues) unfortunately contracted staphylococcus in hospital.
The amputation proposal
This ordeal led to two months on a drip and extreme anxiety. Govou returned to the horror of this period:
“I was in so much pain that at the hospital a doctor told me that the best solution was amputation. I was on morphine and in so much pain that I said yes. I was wracked with pain. Fortunately, my agent, my surgeon and my ex-wife convinced me to finally refuse. »
Treatment and healing
Although he escaped the worst scenario, Govou had to undergo very restrictive treatment for a period of six months, which he compares to chemotherapy: “ Twice a day, a nurse changed my IV. » He admits to having waited for the results of his blood tests every week with immense anxiety to discover the progress of his illness.
Twelve years later, the former Olympique Lyonnais player overcame this terrible ordeal. But the memory of this pain and trauma remains vivid.
