The Reds had attempted to sign the Spaniard after Jürgen Klopp’s imminent departure in 2024 was announced. Although he remained at Bayer Leverkusen before joining Real Madrid this year, a former teammate believes a return to the Reds is possible.
A return to Liverpool for Alonso?
Al-Ahli manager and former Liverpool player Igor Biscan can imagine Alonso joining the Premier League club one day. He adds that he wouldn’t blame the Reds for courting the former midfielder, given his pedigree.
Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Biscan, who played with the Spaniard at Anfield in 2004-05, said: “Xabi Alonso coach of Liverpool? It’s always possible. If it continues on its path, with success and significant impact. Its teams are always efficient, well organized and of high quality. Who wouldn’t dream of a coach like him? »
Slot’s post “not threatened”
Following Liverpool’s heavy 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Slot’s future at the club was called into question, following a run of six defeats in the last seven games. However, the English championship title won with the Reds gives him a certain amount of confidence and the former Feyenoord coach assures that the situation will soon improve. Furthermore, Biscan believes that the Dutchman needs time to turn things around.
He added: “ The pressure is there, but that’s the case for all coaches at this level. I don’t think his position is threatened. Even if he does not win the championship, his performance last year, given the context and the difficulty of his task, is exceptional. Everyone said it would be extremely difficult for him to continue the work of Jürgen Klopp. He is a top quality coach, he deserves all the praise and he needs time. There are so many new players, and it takes time for them to find their automatisms. I have no doubt they will start winning again very soon. »
