Beware of danger! The Canal+ / beIN Sports duo should do without the French Championship for a while.

After the purchase by Canal+ of the broadcast rights to the European Cups (Champions League, Europa League and Conference League) until 2031, a strategic pact seems to be forming with its Qatari partner, beIN Sports. However, this new duo could come at the expense of our good old French championship.

It is thus reported by our colleagues from the Team that Canal+ could resell part of these European rights to beIN Sports. However, the Qatari partner has reportedly made it known that it no longer wishes to broadcast its Ligue 1 poster. The probable consequence of this pact is that the Canal+ / beIN Sports duo could do without the French Championship for a certain period.

Canal+’s strategy for European rights

The maneuver adopted by the Canal+ group for the call for tenders (period 2027-2031) was radical, as during the previous call for tenders: it was all or nothing.

The group led by Maxime Saada had thus put forward an overall proposal covering all the lots. This proposal was only valid on the condition of obtaining full rights. This approach therefore made it possible to put pressure on UEFA, which had to find competing offers strong enough to exceed the total sum advanced by Canal.
