Jack Wilshere, former Arsenal midfielder (2008-2018) and currently coach of Luton, was full of praise for the young Gunners prodigy Max Dowman (15), whom he worked with at the club’s academy when he was coach. “He’s better than me at his age”Wilshere said in an interview with Mirrorimpressed by the talent and maturity of the attacking midfielder. The Englishman also compares Dowman’s influence to that of past role models like Cesc Fàbregas: “Cesc guided me at the time, he was an example on and off the pitch. Max has this same aura, he observes, learns and already shows leadership qualities. » Wilshere added: “The most important thing about Max is that he’s a great guy. He has a good family. His mother is amazing, and his father would do anything for him and wants the best for his son. »
Wilshere also told a revealing anecdote about the young player: “it’s difficult (to say) because I don’t want to be the one who says: ‘he will become this or that’. But for every challenge he faced, I remember playing him with the U18s when he was 13 and we were playing Southampton, a very good youth team. We were leading 2-0 and I said to my assistant: ‘Let’s bring Max in’. I stood next to him and he was already taller than me! I said to him: ‘Max, remember you’re playing against players 5 years older, it doesn’t matter, but don’t get into duels, just pass the ball around.’ He came on and the first thing he did was go around three players, cross and we scored. I looked at my assistant and I had never seen that before. » Strong words from the 33-year-old Englishman, which demonstrate how bright Dowman’s future seems.
