Marcelo Bielsa is renowned for his singular behavior. He makes no secret of it.

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, Uruguay suffered a humiliation against the United States (1-5), during a friendly match in Tampa (Florida). Marcelo Bielsa did not, however, wish to resign after this debacle.

“I feel strong enough to continue.
I have always assumed my responsibilities, legitimately and without deception. On each occasion, I have listed the mistakes I think I have made”explained the Argentinian technician at a press conference.

Arriving on the Céleste bench in May 2023, the former coach of Olympique de Marseille managed to qualify this selection for
the 2026 World Cup. The latter finished in fourth place in their qualifying group, tied on points with Colombia and Brazil.

Bielsa, third World Cup approaching

Bielsa took advantage of his press briefing to discuss his controversial behavior. “I’m only going to use one word: I’m toxic, he confessed.
My presence makes the situation worse for the other person. Yes, I am toxic. I see it as karma… Do you know what this behavior is based on? Fear. We don’t like winning, we fear defeat, much more than victory. »

Now aged 70, Marcelo Bielsa will participate in his third World Cup next June. Previously, he was Argentina’s coach in South Korea and Japan in 2002. Eight years later, he was seen on the Chile bench in South Africa.
