After validating its ticket for the 2026 World Cup last October, Algeria began its preparation for the CAN, scheduled from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026 in Morocco, during this November gathering. And it went rather well for the Fennecs.
After a controlled success against Zimbabwe last Thursday (3-1), Valdimir Petkovic’s men dominated Hervé Renard’s Saudi Arabia this Tuesday (2-0). Enough to fill up on confidence. But before turning fully to the Africa Cup of Nations, the Algerians have another competition to play.
Indeed, Algeria will compete in the Arab Cup from November 25 to December 18. A proximity to the CAN which is not really to the taste of Vladimir Petkovic. “ It’s unfortunate to have two major tournaments at the same time, it deprives the Arab Cup of many important players.”lamented the Swiss technician at a press conference.
Mahrez and Aouar will not play the Arab Cup
Forced to deal with this sequence of competitions, the Algerian coach decided to make strong choices, with the African Cup of Nations remaining the main priority. Therefore, the former Bordeaux coach announced that Riyad Mahrez and Houssem Aouar will not play the Arab Cup.
“ Mahrez and Aouar have the qualities to play in the Arab Cup, but I will not approve of their participation in this competition. What is certain is that both will be affected by the CAN”explained Petkovic. An assumed and completely logical choice.
