After a difficult start to the 2025-2026 season, the Red Devils have achieved a brilliant unbeaten run, including three consecutive victories, since October.
Amorim chose to recruit Lammens rather than Emi Martinez.
After a disastrous 2024-2025 season, André Onana’s future at Old Trafford was uncertain. During the summer, United were tipped to replace the Cameroon goalkeeper, whose performances were disappointing, with a new recruit, and were strongly tipped to sign Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, world champion and Aston Villa star.
Following Altay Bayındır’s poor start to the season and Onana’s departure for Trabzonspor in Türkiye (on loan), the arrival of a new goalkeeper was imminent. The club finally recruited the young Belgian goalkeeper Lammens, from Royal Antwerp, on the last day of the transfer window, thus snubbing Emi Martinez.
Since arriving in England, Lammens has played five Premier League matches, during which he conceded seven goals. He played an important role in Amorim’s three-game winning streak in October against Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton, and was even compared to legendary Red Devils goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, a comparison the youngster brushed aside.
Ferguson praised Lammens’ performances
Former Red Devils coach Ferguson praised the Belgian goalkeeper during his statement to Raceday RTV:
“There are encouraging signs, the manager has seen good things. The goalkeeper, in particular, was exceptional; he’s only played three or four games and he’s really impressive. Of course, Mbeumo and Cunha, the new players from Wolverhampton and Brentford, also contributed to his success. I hope the manager enjoys success, because at United success is essential; the signs are improving. I think teams like United should always aim for two wins in a row. But after going through a period where progression had to come with patience, they will finally savor this success. »
