Ibrahima Konaté has revealed that a final decision on his future at Liverpool will be made soon, with Real Madrid showing strong interest.

The French central defender is entering the final part of his five-year contract with the English champions, signed in 2021. The Reds have yet to reach an agreement with the player for an extension, and he has only a few weeks left before he can begin preliminary discussions with foreign clubs.

The defender’s journey at Liverpool over the past five years

Konaté joined Liverpool in 2021 from RB Leipzig, while Jürgen Klopp was still their manager. The French defender gradually established himself as a key part of the Reds’ defense, first under Klopp, then under Arne Slot. He played a key role in the Mersey club’s record-equalling 20th league title last season. He was an indisputable starter in the central hinge, alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Despite his key role in Slot’s team, Konaté is yet to extend his contract with the club beyond 2026, and Liverpool have yet to offer him a new deal. The Frenchman will be able to begin preliminary discussions with foreign clubs from January. Real Madrid remains interested in the player and wants to convince him not to sign a new contract in order to join him on a free next summer. Bayern Munich, Bundesliga champions, are also in the running, also looking for a quality central defender.

Konaté will soon decide on his future.

Before the non-challenging World Cup qualifying match between France and Azerbaijan on Sunday in Baku, Konaté answered questions about his future: “ My agents continue to speak with Liverpool. I hope my decision will be made very soon so I can announce it. »

The defender brushed off rumors that Liverpool had already approached him with an extension offer, adding: “ I don’t know where it comes from. »
