After a convincing victory against Barcelona in the Clasico, even if it was narrow, Real Madrid were expected to continue their momentum under the leadership of Xabi Alonso.

However, the enthusiasm and morale generated by this victory quickly dissipated.

The following week, the focus was largely not on Real Madrid’s victory, but on Vinicius Junior’s outburst towards Xabi Alonso and his subsequent apology. Despite this public mea culpa and a 4-0 victory over Valencia, headlines continued to focus on the strained relationship between Alonso and his players, according to numerous sources.

Real Madrid worried by unexpected drop in form

According to Diario AS at the start of the week, the management of the Bernabéu said they were “surprised” by the decline conceded against Liverpool (1-0 defeat) and the 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano. The club has not yet found a clear explanation for this lack of regularity or this unattractive game. The concern is palpable: after almost six months at the head of the team, Alonso has failed to inspire or gain the confidence of the locker room.

Total confidence in Xabi Alonso

Despite the surprise, the concern and this unexpected fall, the same author, JosĂ© FĂ©lix DĂaz, published a more recent article assuring that the management, including president Florentino PĂ©rez, has total confidence in Alonso. The article does mention that Trent Alexander-Arnold’s brief appearance at Anfield has raised a few eyebrows, but overall there is no sign of any concern or crisis within the club, who are patiently awaiting the progress of Alonso and his team.

Real Madrid’s lead is crucial

Alonso is perfectly aware that, if he seeks the consistency and attacking play required, he cannot afford to lose points. Much of the criticism stems from reported discontent in the dressing room, but there is no doubt that Real Madrid’s play has been disappointing given their results. If the Merengues lose further ground to Barcelona in La Liga, the tension will become palpable at Valdebebas.
