Real Madrid: Kylian Mbappé calms things down

Kylian Mbappé has broken his silence on Real Madrid’s recent poor run, admitting the team “played very badly” in defeats to Atlético Madrid and Liverpool.

His comments come at a delicate time for Xabi Alonso, whose strict methods have disrupted parts of the dressing room and revealed a much more tumultuous tactical transition than expected.

Real Madrid in difficulty and growing unease under Alonso

Real Madrid entered the season with the hope that Alonso’s discipline and tactical clarity would build on the freedom established under Carlo Ancelotti. However, Alonso’s demanding and rigid framework, with more video work, stricter schedules and greater physical load, would have disrupted players accustomed to the open, player-centric environment advocated by Ancelotti.

Although Alonso’s side are top of La Liga, there have been signs of irregularity, including a 5-2 defeat to Atlético Madrid and a 1-0 reverse at Anfield in the Champions League. Last week’s 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano was once again a reminder of their lack of offensive efficiency. More than twenty shots resulted in nothing, and the ball circulation, slow and predictable, allowed Rayo to be comfortable throughout the match.

Mbappé discusses tensions at Real Madrid despite high expectations.

Following France’s 4-0 win over Ukraine, Mbappé was inevitably asked about the mood in the Madrid dressing room during his post-match interview. His response, brief but revealing, was particularly eloquent: the criticisms are flying, the team is aware that they are performing below their usual level, and the main objective must now be to regain control after the international break.

“What do you want me to say?” I have nothing to say”, he declared. “ When you don’t win at Real Madrid, people talk a lot, and we haven’t won the last two games. We played very badly, but we will come back after the break ready to beat Elche.

In the end, we are first in La Liga and among the eight best teams in the Champions League. “It’s not perfect, but we all know that when things don’t work on the ground, people talk and talk. But we are united to win all the titles this year.
