Hasselbaink did not mince his words regarding Ruben Amorim and Manchester United. Asked about Sky Sportsthe former striker felt that the club had not progressed since the arrival of the Portuguese: “where, where have they improved? I don’t think they’ve improved, sorry. They didn’t score more goals, they didn’t concede fewer goals, they didn’t win any trophies.” He points out the limits of the Portuguese coach’s current record despite the Europa League final lost to Tottenham last year. Under Amorim, United have scored 51 Premier League goals and conceded 60, leaving questions surrounding the Portuguese’s ability to return the club to its historic standards.

Hasselbaink also highlighted the gap between Amorim’s style of play and the traditional DNA of Manchester United, a legacy of the Sir Alex Ferguson years: “I don’t think they are creative enough, not like before”. Despite his success at Sporting Lisbon, where he won 2 titles, the Portuguese’s 3-4-2-1 system remains unprecedented for the Red Devils. Currently, Manchester United is positioned in 7th place in the Premier League.
