The CAN in Morocco bereaved

The African Cup of Nations is imminent, scheduled from December 21 to January 18, 2026 in Morocco. It is in this context, in the midst of preparations for the event, that a tragedy occurred at the Ibn-Batouta stadium in Tangier.

As the venue prepares to reopen its doors as part of a friendly match between Morocco and Mozambique on Friday evening – this after major renovation work – a young man died after falling while cleaning a glass facade of the building.

Despite the speed of emergency services dispatched to the scene, the victim could not be resuscitated. She was then part of a team responsible for refining the installations for the 2025 African Cup of Nations. This is a heartbreaking incident. Everyone is devastated », confides one of his colleagues.

An open investigation

He was young, hardworking and respected by all members of the team. No one expected such a thing to happen », breathes another witness cited by the Moroccan press. Local authorities have already opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the tragedy.

Now equipped with more than 75,000 seats, the Ibn-Batouta stadium in Tangier will soon host three matches in the first phase of CAN 2025: Senegal-Botswana, Senegal-DR Congo and Benin-Senegal (December 30). But also an eighth, a quarter and a semi-final.
