The Merengues have officially given a new name to their stadium, even if this does not represent a major break with the common name.
President Florentino PĂ©rez wants to modernize the club’s ownership model and is expected to present proposed changes to the member ownership system at next week’s General Assembly. This initiative follows the renovation work on the stadium, completed last year, and Real Madrid’s plan to build an underground car park connected to the stadium, as well as renovate the metro station which serves it. The construction of the underground car park is currently suspended following a legal appeal filed by local residents.
Real Madrid unveils âBernabeuâ
Although the change was discussed last year, Real Madrid have now made the name change of their stadium official: the Estadio de Santiago Bernabeu will now be simply called “Bernabeu”. As Diario AS explains, a new logo, displaying the shortened name of the stadium, was seen this week during the promotional campaign carried out by the club with the NFL. The BernabĂ©u will host Spain’s first American football match on Sunday, pitting the Washington Commanders against the Miami Dolphins.
Real Madrid renames its stadium
A new lease of life for the Bernabéu
This name change is not only part of an overhaul of the image of the Bernabéu, which bears the name of club legend and former president Santiago Bernabéu, but also a true renaissance for the stadium. Through the renovations, Real Madrid added a restaurant area as well as several new bars and dining areas. These new features represent new sources of income for the club, and architect Josep Ribas said that the soundproofing of the stadium, which will allow concerts to be organized there, will be completed by 2026. For Christmas, the Bernabéu will also host a festive amusement park intended to attract families and children.
