This is very sad news. Several Moroccan media announced this Thursday the death of a maintenance worker who worked on the construction site of the Ibn-Batouta stadium in Tangier. The young man apparently fell to his death while cleaning the exterior glass facade of the enclosure.
The Ibn-Batouta stadium has been renovated in preparation for the next African Cup of Nations (CAN), which will take place from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026. Its reopening is also scheduled for this Friday (8 p.m.), on the occasion of the friendly match between the Atlas Lions and Mozambique.
According to the first information collected, emergency services intervened quickly to try to save the young worker, in vain. The Moroccan authorities have opened an investigation to shed light on this tragedy and in particular to assess whether security measures were respected.
“Everyone is devastated”
“ This is a heartbreaking incident. Everyone is devastated “, indicated an employee, extremely shocked, and added: “ He was young, hardworking and respected by all members of the team. No one expected such a thing to happen. »
The Ibn-Batouta stadium, whose capacity has been increased to 75,000 seats, will host three matches in Group D of CAN 2025: Senegal-Botswana (December 23), Senegal-DR Congo (December 27) and Benin-Senegal (December 30). It will also be the scene of a round of 16, a quarter-final and a semi-final.
