Lucas Stassin is patient. Despite good statistics in 2025 with ASSE, the striker was never called up by Rudi Garcia with the Belgian selection. However, the Red Devils are without Romelu Lukaku, currently injured. Can the Stéphanois hope for a call-up for the 2026 World Cup, despite his presence in Ligue 2?

In a recent interview with RTBFStassin confirms that playing in the second division does not make his situation easier. “I am happy for Romeo (Vermant), he deserves his selection. He plays in the Champions League, in the 1st division and Rudi Garcia mentioned that in September. It relies enormously on the championship in which the player plays”declared the Stéphanois.

Last summer, Stassin tried everything to leave Saint-Étienne, clearly expressing his intentions to the Saint-Etienne leaders. Despite interest from Ligue 1 clubs like Lens, Paris FC and Rennes, ASSE refused to let him leave. Canadian owner Larry Tanenbaum and executive president Ivan Gazidis wouldn’t listen, even rejecting offers of more than 20 million euros to keep his top scorer from the previous season (12 goals).

A departure for England?

Today, the young 20-year-old striker is going through a delicate period. He has not scored since September 23, seven consecutive matches in Ligue 2. His tally remains stuck at 4 goals and 3 assists in 12 appearances, including 7 starts. Coach Eirik Horneland now prefers the Englishman Joshua Duffus, sparkling in the last three matches against Pau, Red Star and Troyes.

However, the situation could change quickly. According to
Live FootballSaint-Étienne would consider putting Stassin on the market from January. “If they (Stassin and Davitashvili) had to leave, we could deal with these departures. We have a lot of offensive options, it’s a very good thing for us”Horneland said this weekend. A sale in January would allow the club to recover more than 15 million euros, and West Ham would already be in the running to secure the services of the Stéphanois.
