Portugal has been buzzing for weeks with a rumor as explosive as it is painful. Images published by a celebrity magazine would have shown Ruben Neves in the company of Rute Cardoso, the widow of his former teammate and friend Diogo Jota, who tragically disappeared in July 2025. According to the magazine’s shocking cover TV Guiathe Al-Hilal player would have found “comfort” in the arms of his friend’s widow. A statement that shocked fans and sowed confusion in Portuguese football.
Friendship or betrayal? The dark secret behind the Neves – Jota rumor
But the truth is quite different. The image published by TV Guia turned out to be misleading. Taken out of context, she does not show any intimate gesture, much less a kiss. According to several Portuguese media, the photo was distorted to suggest an ambiguous proximity between the two protagonists. Ruben Neves, married for more than eleven years to Débora Lourenço, immediately reacted on Instagram, denouncing “shameful manipulation” and recalling that his couple had lived “peacefully, without the slightest shadow for more than a decade”.
In reality, Neves and Jota shared a deep friendship forged in Porto. After the accident which cost the attacker his life, Neves naturally approached Rute Cardoso to support her in her mourning. The photos in question were taken during a private tribute, where the deceased’s loved ones gathered to honor his memory. Nothing in these photos proves the slightest romantic relationship.
Neves-Jota scandal: the investigation that restores the truth
The magazine singled out
Faced with the controversy, Neves firmly denounced the magazine’s practices:
“The person who put this photo on the cover doesn’t deserve to be happy.” His words resonated widely with the public, shocked by this exploitation of a family’s mourning. Several Portuguese journalists also criticized the sensationalist drift of certain celebrity media, recalling that
“ethics should never yield to the click”.
Far from any betrayal, Ruben Neves chose to pay tribute to his deceased friend in a poignant way: by having his face tattooed on his arm. A strong gesture, symbol of intact loyalty. The rumor, now discredited, will at least have shed light on an essential truth: in the din of the networks and tabloids, decency remains the first duty.
