The African Cup of Nations is fast approaching. From December 21 to January 18, 2026, Morocco will host the 35th edition of the continental tournament. Even before kick-off, the Kingdom will host the play-offs for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers: Cameroon will face DR Congo, while Nigeria will face Gabon. The two qualifiers will face each other in the final on Sunday, November 16.
But a short video of barely ten seconds sparked a controversy. Alex Iwobi, the 29-year-old Nigerian winger playing for Fulham, shared several stories on Snapchat upon his arrival in Rabat. In one of them, he seems to make fun of the standing and location of his team’s hotel.
Iwobi calms things down
Quickly relayed on social networks, the sequence sparked numerous comments, notably from Moroccan supporters reproaching Iwobi for his lack of respect, despite the fact that the choice of the hotel falls to the Nigerian Football Federation. Faced with the controversy, the player wanted to react on Monday from his hotel bed.
“I’ve seen some mockery, it’s just a matter of perspective. Because I took a snapshot of the view, people said, this guy is not grateful. But I didn’t say a word”assures the Super Eagles player. “I just looked like that (he reproduces the look in question). I didn’t say a word. I’m comfortable, I play Mario Kart. Let me concentrate. We have a big match coming up”he adds. An intervention which aims to calm the situation.
