He is not the most high-sounding name in Europe, but his progress leaves no one indifferent. Arriving at Crystal Palace in January 2024, Colombian right-back Daniel Muñoz has established himself as a reference in his position in the Premier League, actively participating in the club’s historic first trophy with an FA Cup last season. At 29, he is now in the sights of two of the biggest clubs on the continent: Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona.

The Parisian offensive dictated by urgency

On the Paris side, interest was born out of a shock. The injury to Achraf Hakimi, released during the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, highlighted the urgent need for a high-level understudy. According to the media FilesMuñoz’s profile is considered ideal by the Parisian sports management. The capital club would even be ready to make a concrete offer of around 30 million euros (£26M) to convince Crystal Palace to let go of their defender.

Barça, however, has not said its last word. The Catalan club, looking for reliable and experienced reinforcements at a lower cost, is also following the matter very closely. Muñoz’s style of play, very offensive and generous in effort, corresponds perfectly to the philosophy of the two giants. The battle therefore promises to be intense for a player who has proven his worth in the most demanding championship in the world.

A duel with a Cold War feel

This confrontation on the transfer market has a special flavor. It inevitably recalls the electric relations that PSG and FC Barcelona have long maintained. Nobody has forgotten the war of nerves around Marco Verratti, who Barça wanted at all costs, nor the historic transfer of Neymar, when Paris lifted its release clause of 222 million euros, leaving the Catalan club humiliated and furious. These episodes created lasting distrust between the two institutions.

If tensions have eased somewhat in recent years, notably with the transfer of Ousmane Dembélé to Paris, this new face-to-face for Daniel Muñoz could reignite the embers. It remains to be seen whether the two clubs will play the card of direct confrontation or whether a new, more cordial era is really taking hold. The fate of the Colombian could well be the first real test.
