0 goals, 0 assists in 11 Premier League matches. This is Florian Wirtz’s starving record since his arrival on the banks of the Mersey. A more than disappointing return, especially for a player recruited for a check for 140 million euros from Bayer Leverkusen. Criticized from all sides in recent weeks, the German international (35 caps, 8 goals) still fails to take off. Sunday, during the clash against Manchester City, the number 7 of the Reds once again disappointed in great ways.

Overwhelmed by Mancunian intensity, just like his teammates, the native of Pulheim never came out on top. Replaced by Federico Chiesa ten minutes from time, Wirtz could only see the damage: 0 shots on target, 9 lost balls, 50% of duels won and above all an inability to make the difference. Aligned on the left side of the Liverpool attack, the 1m77 right-hander, perfectly blocked by Matheus Nunes, nevertheless refused to admit defeat at the final whistle.

Wirtz gets annoyed!

“Of course, I know this position well, but I can also play up front, as a number 10 or on the left wing. I just try to always give the best of myself and be important for the team”indicated the defector from Leverkusen before returning to his contrasting beginnings in England. “I think I already have a good understanding with my teammates on the pitch. I try to surpass myself in every match, that’s what I always do and I’m happy to be able to create chances. I hope that in the coming weeks and months we can score more, but for now I’m just trying to help the team with my strengths.”.

Relaunched on his difficult adaptation, the attacking midfielder nevertheless expressed – for the first time – his annoyance. “It’s different, that’s for sure (the Premier League, editor’s note), but after eleven matches, I got used to it. I know what to expect now, so there’s no need to talk about it any further. I’m here to help the team win, and unfortunately, it didn’t work today (Sunday, editor’s note).”. Most certainly frustrated by his current performance at Liverpool, Florian Wirtz will now have to find the keys to definitively launch his adventure across the Channel. In the meantime, his detractors are enjoying themselves, weekend after weekend.
