FC Barcelona should look to strengthen its defense in 2026, given its difficulties in this sector since the start of the season.

A replacement for Iñigo Martínez is being sought, and rumors are also circulating regarding a possible reinforcement at right-back.

Hansi Flick wanted to recruit a new right-back this summer, but the arrivals of Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford filled the lack of available space. Since then, Jules Koundé, usual starter, has struggled to regain his form, while Eric Garcia is mainly used in central defense.

The need for a new right-back is becoming more pressing

As a result, the need for a new right-back is becoming more pressing, and it is logical that a recruitment is considered for 2026. According to several sources (via MD), FC Barcelona is interested in Daniel Muñoz from Crystal Palace, whom it has been following closely for some time.

Muñoz is the second Crystal Palace player to interest FC Barcelona, after England international Marc Guehi, who is free from any contract next summer. However, his recruitment will be much more difficult, given that he is under contract with the Premier League club until 2028, making a cut-price transfer impossible.

The right-back position should not be a priority for Barcelona.

With FC Barcelona focused on recruiting a new central defender and a striker, they are unlikely to have the funds to sign a new right back. In addition, Flick will be able to count on young people from La Masia, Hector Fort (currently on loan to Elche) and Xavi Espart, alongside Koundé and Eric. There is therefore no urgency to strengthen this position, despite the current difficulties.

Time will tell what FC Barcelona’s activities will be next summer, but it would be surprising to see a transfer for Muñoz – or any other right-back – considered.
