The absence of Julián Álvarez among the 22 strikers shortlisted for The Best 2025 prize caused surprise and annoyance at Atlético de Madrid. The club expressed its amazement on social networks, emphasizing that the Argentinian, with his 29 goals scored during his first season in Madrid, would have deserved to appear alongside stars like Dembélé or Lamine Yamal. His exceptional season seems to have been ignored by FIFA, while other renowned attackers like Messi, CR7 or Vinicius were retained.

During this first season at Atlético, Álvarez scored 29 goals in all competitions and provided 8 assists in 57 matches. Despite these impressive statistics and his decisive impact, FIFA did not include him in their list. To mark its disagreement, the club published a tweet with the spider emoji, symbol of Julián Álvarez, thus expressing its astonishment and support for its Argentine star.
