Beaten by Atalanta in the Champions League, OM suffered the wrath of critics, notably those of Jérôme Rothen, who strongly criticized the club’s European record as well as that of its coach, Roberto De Zerbi.

Olympique de Marseille lost to Atalanta (0-1) on Wednesday, at home, in the Champions League. Roberto De Zerbi’s men delivered a disappointing performance and were punished by a controversial goal from the Bergamasques at the end of the match.

This new setback for the Olympians in C1, the third of the season in four matches, did not fail to provoke a reaction in France. Jérôme Rothen, on the airwaves of RMCcastigated the level displayed by the Marseille team.

De Zerbi, the casting error

The former PSG midfielder underlined the position of OM, currently 25th in the league phase, synonymous with non-qualification, as well as the Italian technician’s record in the premier competition of Europe.
“OM are ridiculous in terms of results, that’s the reality. (…) They find themselves in difficulty and in a pack of teams which have been eliminated for the moment and which look more like Europa League teams than Champions League teams. You have to call a spade a spade. (…) When you see De Zerbi’s record, it’s 10 Champions League matches and one victory. You summed it all up. (…) There was a casting error,” he said.

For Rothen, the results of the Marseille club on the European scene are not up to the sums invested
“Who recruited and made this team? When you see the means of OM, which are not the means of Atalanta, and you see such a difference in performance and technical achievement. In this match, apart from Greenwood and Rulli, the rest is to be thrown away”regretted the consultant.
