FC Barcelona is under fire again this week over the construction of the Camp Nou, following new protests against the renovation work.

In 2023, the club had already been criticized for using illegal labor practices, but claimed to be in the process of remedying the situation.

The Blaugrana are once again criticized for using the Turkish construction group Limak, already under fire for attacks on the environment and workers’ rights. Previously, the unions had sounded the alarm about possible abuses at the Spotify Camp Nou construction site, but the institutional vice-president, Elena Fort, had affirmed that these were simply a few anomalies being resolved, and not intentional or systematic abuses.

“The Camp Nou cannot be built at the expense of workers’ rights”

The Confederation of Labor Commission Unions (CCOO) demonstrated in front of the Camp Nou last Wednesday, denouncing the work of undocumented migrants in illegal conditions. The head of the CCOO, Carlos del Barrio, said that around fifty employees were affected.

“Some have been working twelve hours a day, seven days a week, for more than a year,” he told Diario AS.

“We are aware of the strong pressure to reopen the stadium, but there is no question of doing so at the expense of workers’ rights. »

FC Barcelona is keen to return to Camp Nou as soon as possible.

Call to the government for “normalization of the situation”

The demonstration broke out after the companies Limak and Ekstreme Works threatened to dismiss 50 employees, not affiliated with social security and currently working without guarantee of their rights in Spain. Del Barrio urged the government to activate the legislation provided for this purpose in order to guarantee the rights of these workers.

“As soon as they set foot on Turkish territory, their ability to defend themselves will be diminished,” Del Barrio stressed.

While Limak and Ekstreme Works are handling the situation, Del Barrio lamented that FC Barcelona ignored their demands.
